This 7-day trek through Mount Kenya National Park offers a challenging yet rewarding adventure that takes you to the peak of one of Africa’s most iconic mountains. From lush forests and alpine meadows to glaciers and rocky terrains, you will experience a diverse range of landscapes and ecosystems. The trek is designed to provide you with an immersive experience in the beauty and wildlife of Mount Kenya, culminating with the sunrise summit at Lenana Peak.
Start your adventure with an early morning pick-up from Nairobi. The scenic drive north takes you through Kenya’s stunning countryside, where you’ll pass through parts of the Great Rift Valley. As you ascend, the landscape changes, offering panoramic views of rolling hills and farms. Reaching Mount Kenya National Park, your journey takes you to 2,000 meters above sea level, where the air is cooler, and the change in altitude begins to be felt.
Take a guided forest walk to learn about the medicinal properties of local plants and spot birdlife and mammals in the surroundings. You’ll also have time to visit the Mau-Mau caves, significant for their historical and geological importance. After a day of exploring, relax with a hearty dinner at your mountain lodge, preparing for the trek ahead.
After an early breakfast, you will travel by vehicle to the Sirimon Gate—the starting point of your trek. The landscape here will surprise you with its cool climate and mountain forests. As you walk through the bamboo groves and moorlands, you’ll encounter a landscape that feels more akin to a cool temperate zone than the hot African savanna.
After 2-3 hours of hiking, you’ll have ascended 740 meters and arrive at the Old Moses Hut (3,300 meters), where your porters will have set up camp. Enjoy a well-deserved dinner and rest, ready for the challenges that lie ahead.
Start your day with a fresh breakfast, followed by a trek through the serene moorlands and into the Likii Valley. The valley’s craggy lands have been shaped over millennia by glaciers, offering stunning views that will leave you awe-struck. Your guide will help you identify specialized flora such as Ostrich plum lobelia and cabbage groundsel, unique to this high-altitude environment.
By midday, you’ll reach Likii Hut (3,500 meters), where lunch awaits. The afternoon offers an optional hike to Terere Peak (4,714 meters) to aid your acclimatization, giving you a preview of the peaks to come.
After a nourishing breakfast, you’ll head to the Mackinder Valley. The landscape here is truly otherworldly, with strange plant life and expansive views. Keep your eyes peeled for the rock hyrax, a small animal related to elephants, and the vibrant sunbirds that flit around the rocky terrain.
Arriving at Shipton Camp (4,236 meters), you’ll be greeted by dramatic views of the mountain’s towering peaks and the receding glaciers. After a long day of trekking, enjoy dinner and a restful night under the stars.
Today is designed to prepare you for the final ascent with some intense trekking. After breakfast, you’ll tackle the Hausberg Col, reaching 4,700 meters before descending into the Hausberg Valley. From there, continue scrambling over massive boulders to the Two Tarn area, before heading down into the Teleki Valley for some respite in the greenery.
The day’s journey brings you to Austrian Camp (4,780 meters) as part of the Summit Circuit, a crucial route that prepares you for the Lenana Peak ascent the following day. This challenging day will help you gain confidence for the summit!
The final ascent begins early to ensure you reach the summit at sunrise. The trek to Lenana Peak (4,895 meters) will take you through frozen ground and challenging terrain, with the stunning Lewis Glacier as your backdrop. The first hour or two will be dark and demanding, so a powerful headlamp is a must.
Upon reaching the summit, you’ll be rewarded with incredible views of Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance, the vast plains of Kenya stretching below, and the towering glaciers of Mount Kenya. Celebrate your accomplishment before descending to Mackinder’s Camp for breakfast. Spend the afternoon resting or exploring the surrounding area.
On your final morning, enjoy a hearty breakfast before making your way down from the mountain. The descent takes about 5 hours, leading you down to the Naromoru Gate at an easier altitude of 2,600 meters.
Once at the gate, your driver will take you to Mountain Rock Lodge for a well-earned lunch and a chance to rest. From here, you’ll be driven back to Nairobi, where you can be dropped off at your hotel or the airport, concluding your memorable Mount Kenya trekking safari.

I just completed my 4-day trip to Mount Kenya and I’m very satisfied with all the services provided. I received excellent assistance throughout the entire process, from start to finish. I would strongly recommend choosing them if you’re planning a trip to Kenya—I would definitely choose them again if I return.Posted on Ajith Vasudevan2025.03.03.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. After screening and talking to about 5 travel operators, I decided to go with Nature Romp for an 8 day safari in Kenya, in Feb 2025. Their rate was competitive and selection of lodges to stay very good. Initially I was skeptical due to less reviews about Nature Romp in public domain. However when I talked to Yvonne, I understood that theirs is a fairly new company and I decided to go with them. We (my daughter and I) opted for a private tour covering Masai Mara, Nakuru and Amboseli. We were received at the Nairobi airport and the next day early morning Yvonne, Lucy and Maxwell (guide cum driver) welcomed us at the hotel, prior to starting the safari. We instantly felt at home and from then onwards it was a positive experience all the time. Our guide Maxwell is an excellent guide. He knew about birds and animals, their behavior and diligent in driving (safe driving). He was always on time. If i had to do anything differently, its only about selecting the stay option at one place (Naivasha). Although the accommodation was very good, it was pretty far from the National park. Drawing the route map and time to take to this palace would have helped me giving an additional 4 hours for bird photography. Thank you Yvonne and Maxwell. I surely plan to do another safari with Nature Romp in 2026Posted on Charles Otieno2024.11.26.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. initially asked for 3 quotations for my 7-days safari in Kenya (Masai Mara-Amboseli-Nakuru-Naivasha). All 3 tours companies replied me right away but Ms Yvonne Ateka from Nature Romp Safaris was by far the most outstanding and patient in answering dozens of my questions concerning visa, safety, accommodation, preparation, etc… She was also extremely flexible in helping me changing my safari schedule due to my unexpected 2-days delay at transit airport New Delhi. The entire tour was fascinating!!! It was the very best trip I’ve ever had (I’ve travelled 30+ countries so far)! Kenyan nature and wildlife is breathtakingly beautiful even more than I’ve imagined before… Freddy was very caring, knowledgeable and a super offroad driver. Thank you so much again Yvonne & Freddy for making my trip in Kenya a great experience! I would wholeheartedly recommend you guys for all my friends travelling to you amazing country!Posted on Paola2024.03.09.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
