Day By Day Itinerary

  • Day 1: Mount Kenya by Road – Walk to Old Moses (215 km – 3 to 4 hours driving, 10 km – 3 to 4 hrs walking)

    Your adventure begins at 7:30 AM when we pick you up from your hotel, residence, or directly from the airport in Nairobi. We’ll drive north towards the highlands of Mount Kenya. Along the way, we’ll stop in Nanyuki, where your guide ensures all necessary supplies for the trek are ready.

    From Nanyuki, we’ll enter Mount Kenya National Park through the Sirimon Gate. You’ll enjoy a scenic picnic lunch before the trek begins. The hike takes you through lush forested areas at the foot of the mountain, covering 10 km and ascending gradually. You’ll enjoy the cool, fresh mountain air and stunning views of the surrounding flora and fauna.

    Your overnight stop is Old Moses Camp, situated at 3,300 meters. This simple, rustic camp provides a perfect resting spot with hearty dinner, offering a chance to relax and acclimatize for the challenging days ahead.

  • Day 2: Old Moses – Shipton Camp (13.5 km – 7 to 8 hours)

    After breakfast, fueled by your porters’ hospitality, you’ll begin a demanding 7 to 8-hour hike. The path leads west through beautiful valleys and over rugged ridges, offering constant challenge and rewarding vistas.

    The trek will bring you through Mackinder Valley, famous for its unique vegetation and diverse wildlife, including rock hyraxes darting between rocks. Your guide will point out interesting plants, such as the lobelia and cabbage groundsel, which thrive in this high-altitude environment.

    By the end of the day, you’ll reach Shipton Camp at 4,200 meters. Your porters will have prepared warm drinks and meals to help you settle in. Take in the stunning views of glaciers and rocky outcrops on the peak—rest well, as tomorrow is an early and long day.

  • Day 3: Shipton Camp – Summit, to Old Moses Camp (18.5 km – 11.5 hours)

    Your day begins before dawn at 2:30 AM. A quick breakfast of tea and biscuits fuels you for the climb. At 3 AM, you’ll start your ascent to Lenana Peak (4,985 meters). This is a challenging trek over rocky scree and glaciers, requiring both physical stamina and mental resolve.

    Reaching the summit will be an exhilarating moment, with spectacular views that may even include Mount Kilimanjaro on a clear day. After savoring the views and taking in the sense of achievement, you’ll begin the descent back to Shipton Camp.

    After a well-deserved breakfast at Shipton Camp, you’ll continue your descent to Old Moses Camp, where you will arrive in approximately 5 hours. Enjoy a hearty dinner and rest for your final day on the mountain.

  • Day 4: Old Moses – Sirimon Gate, to Nairobi by Road (10 km – 3 to 4 hrs walking, 215 km – 3 to 4 hours driving)

    Your final hike begins with a fulfilling breakfast at Old Moses Camp. The descent takes you through the forest and bamboo thickets, revisiting some of the terrain you passed on the way up. With the oxygen-rich air at lower altitudes, you’ll feel a refreshing burst of energy as you make your way down.

    After covering the 10 km to Sirimon Gate, you’ll be met by your driver, who will take you on a scenic drive back to Nairobi. As you drive through the Great African Rift Valley and picturesque Kenyan countryside, you’ll reflect on your remarkable journey.

    You’ll arrive in Nairobi in the early evening, where we can drop you at your hotel, residence, or directly at the airport depending on your travel plans.
